Students

What can the Dean of Students do for me? We are your advocates in a crisis.

College isn't easy. Sometimes pressures build and you may feel like you have nowhere to turn. Do not fear, the Dean of Students staff is here for you. If you're facing an issue that is interfering with your University of Arkansas experience, we want to help!

Academic

Acquiring knowledge and earning a degree are why students attend college. Sometimes things get in the way of these academic pursuits and students need some accommodations to help them succeed.

In the event a student has an existing Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or need for accommodation while on campus they are advised to consult with our Center for Educational Access. Students can request accommodations fitting their needs ranging from note-taker accommodations to mobility assistance. To see if a student qualifies or what accommodations exist, visit CEA's website.
If the hold is a General Student Services hold, please contact the Office of the Dean of Students who will assist with determining which department placed the hold and what your next steps include.
If you have concerns about withdrawing, feel free to contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 479-575-5004 to schedule an appointment with the UA Cares Coordinator. The coordinator will be able to help in determining if there are other factors involved in the recommendation of withdrawing, such as medical reasons, problems adjusting to campus life, or some mitigating circumstance that may have caused a financial crisis. The UA Cares Coordinator will be able to make a referral to the Financial Aid Office, Scholarship Office, or Provost’s Office depending on eligibility of available resources.
The Office of the Dean of Students encourages communication between the student and instructor regarding absences and make up work as outlined in the instructor’s syllabus. The Dean of Students does not supply excused absence notes. Our office will only notify instructors when a student is hospitalized or is incapable of contacting instructors themselves.

A paper copy of your first freshman financial aid award will be sent in the mail. You will also receive financial aid award notifications through your University of Arkansas e-mail. Each e-mail will direct you to visit UAConnect and view the new financial aid award in your Student Center.
Maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA, and enroll full-time each semester – 12 hours in your first freshman term, and 15 hours in each semester after that. This means completing 27 credit hours during the first year and earning 30 total credit hours in the next three. Any remedial coursework must be completed within the first 30 hours, and students must be continuously enrolled unless seeking an exception. If you drop classes or have other needs to make up hours, it is possible to do so and keep your scholarship; you should talk with your academic advisor, visit the scholarship office, or get help from a staff mentor in the Student Success Center, the multicultural center, or another resource center on campus. Find a complete explanation of eligibility at scholarships.adhe.edu.

Health & Wellness

Sometimes a student can experience a personal emergency or a medical issue. We want you to know that you have options and resources to make informed decisions about your academic career based on your personal situation.

Needing academic accommodations? Think you might need them? Get registered with the Center for Educational Access (CEA) so accommodations can be implemented quickly if needed. Provision of reasonable accommodations is determined individually, based on the nature of the student's disability, the environmental barriers encountered, and the content of documentation provided. Please feel free to take a look at examples of accommodations which may be available. Students can register with CEA and request accommodations at any point during the semester, but accommodations are not retroactive.
