Faculty & Staff

I need to help a student. Should I send them to the Dean of Students?

The Dean of Students office can help faculty and staff with many issues that students may be experiencing. The Dean’s team has a great understanding of student behavior, educational outcomes, and University resources. We are committed to the success of every student at the University of Arkansas, one student at a time.

Please contact us with any questions about a student, including behavior in the classroom, potential Code of Conduct violations, or students’ general welfare. We welcome the opportunity to speak with you.

Students may find themselves in an emergency or medical situation requiring they leave class before the semester has ended.  To prevent losing the successful progress in their course, students can request an Incomplete mark. Information on giving a mark of “I” for a class is available from the Office of the Registrar.

This information can also be accessed in the Faculty Handbook on the Office of the Provost website.

The Office of the Dean of Students does not ask instructors to excuse absences. Students are advised to make personal contact with instructors regarding any absences.  It is at the discretion of the instructor’s syllabus policy whether or not a student can make up any missed work.  In the event that a student is hospitalized or otherwise unable to reach out to their instructor on their own, the Office of the Dean of Students will intercede on behalf of the student by submitting a notification to the instructor regarding the student’s absence.

Faculty should also consult the Attendance Policy for Student and the Information on Absences for Religious Observations in the Catalogue of Studies.

UofA Cares offers a supportive and encouraging partnership with campus and community constituents. UofA Cares is there to help students in need, and the Dean's office encourages you to send students either to UofA Cares or directly to the Dean's office is you think a student is in need. If you feel the student needs immediate attention, please call the Dean On-Duty line at 479-575-8620. Other campus concerns can also be reported at report.uark.edu. If this is an emergency, please call 911.
